August Grey Music:

By Julian Cuebas
I had the chance to meet August Grey (IG link) at Slade & I.Sean’s Crossgen event series. He’s good nature and smooth stage presence was a sight to see. So naturally I reached out to him for a profile interview to get to know this local rapper better.

Who is August Grey? Has your MC name changed since you started?
August Grey is a moniker. Came up with it as soon as I started releasing music. I always said If I had a son that would be his name. So I’m just trying to set him up for life yah know?

What genre/genre style would you say you fit into?
August: I think with the way music is going. Especially as far as Hip-hop, Rap, and R&B genres, stations, and labels don’t have barriers like genre and genre-based artists like there used to be. I think with the way it has evolved anything is possible.

Who inspires you?
August: Too many to count. But to name a few: Blink 182, Jimi Hendrix, Mac Miller, Bon Iver, and Kanye.

Do you prefer collaboration or solo work?
August: Both.

Music theory or musical intuition?
August: Musical intuition for sure! I grew up learning to play the drums by ear and listening to old classic rock records with my dad or watching him play. Music is a Whole Mood. You can’t duplicate things perfectly twice in a row.

What’s a moment you have recently enjoyed in your music journey?
August: Just really humbled by all the feedback and the opportunity that has made its way to me man.. It’s been crazy.

What are your impulses to write about?
August: It could be anything, especially experiences in life that have gotten me to this point. My story. Or some days it could just be how I feel at the moment or music that I’m listening to that inspires me.

What is the music scene to you in Chattanooga?
August: I think it has potential for sure. I think we’ve had a couple great artists pave the way for people as far as getting Chattanooga, a relatively small and beautiful city noticed. But I don’t think it has amassed its full potential.

What has been a challenge for you in your musical path?
August: Structuring

What is something you’re working on that you’d like people to know about?
August: Just know I’ve got a lot of things I’m excited about coming y’alls way. Just be on the lookout.

Any other words or comments?
August: 'Preciate you for this bro. Glad I could let my voice be heard. I’m also planning going on tour through Miracle Music Group early 2019 with a few artists I believe have mad potential. Also merchandise, website, and tour dates will be up soon.
