DRIP DROPS of HIP-HOP from CHATTANOOGA
Our profile this week is one of our favorite DJ's in Chattanooga!
Sammy: How is Turntables Whit a Twist going? Seems like a dope concept!
DJ D-Whit: Turntables Whit a Twist is going good. Last week was the last week until after graduation in May! I'm doing a little revamping so I can get the concept a lot more involved with the youth. The whole thought of Turntables Whit a Twist came from people & DJs constantly asking me to do classes, teach them, etc. Along with that I had my first taste of teaching with Spot venue, shout out to Lance and Sarah, during a camp they set up last year and had an amazing time with my students. So I put the play into action and included dancing since I'm heavily involved within the dance community in Chattanooga and Memphis. It was more so to bring the DJs together to create more of a family vibe like other cities because DJs here seem to have had previous issues so I wanted to bring us all together; have jam sessions and more stuff but a lot of people went silent once I started. May have had something to do with availability, but regardless I appreciate everyone who supported and even share on social media.
Sammy: Since moving here from Memphis to go to UTC, what are your thoughts on the local hip-hop scene here in Chattanooga?
DJ D-Whit: Compared to Memphis, Chattanooga has a lot of growing to do as a Hip-Hop community. However, the artists here are something serious. They have a unique style and a lot of energy.
Sammy: You DJ, you dance, you sing, you produce music? Is there anything you can't do?
DJ D-Whit: Aye mane! You can't be spilling beans jack! LOL, but mane I try to do as much as I can! I've always been taught that I can do anything I put my mind to. Just really sit back and think to yourself, "I can do ANYTHING" and watch it manifest. I'm currently working on learning how to play saxophone. So I can get with Swayyvo! Shoutout to him, he's a cool cat!

Sammy: What's on tap for 2018? Who else might you be working with this year?
DJ D-Whit: 2018 is the year of REBIRTH! I'm graduating from UT Chattanooga. I plan on becoming a tour DJ and continuing to build my brand. Don't have anybody new on this list as of yet but I'm definitely still working with Kay B Brown, Ant DeWayne out of Memphis, Keenon Rush in Atlanta, Yrn Kp in Atlanta, and pushing this new Wayne Greaty! His new album is crazy! He's from Memphis also! Ya'll go check out Abstract on Apple Music, Spotify, etc.
Sammy: When did you start DJ'ing? Who did you learn from? Who do you look up to in the industry?
DJ D-Whit: I started messing around with DJing around 2010 when my mom bought me a DJ controller that was like $50. She's also the reason I done tried almost every instrument because she bought me some type of keyboard, guitar, or any other instrument each year for christmas. Shoutout to mama! But anyway I REALLY started in 2014! In Orange Mound doing a block party thanks to my step dad Melvin. He wanted me to DJ the family event for the 4th of July because their usual DJ backed out, so he chose to go buy 2 speakers and an amp from the pawn shop for $400. That was the start of it all. I DJ'd for at least 14 hours that day. Sun up to sun down. I didn't learn from anybody personally. I watched videos of Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, DJ Scratch, Skratch Bastid, and many of the other greats. In the industry, I look up to Jazzy Jeff for sure because of his skills and his business mindset. He has his hands in so many pockets, it's ridiculous.
Sammy: What's moving the crowds these days? What's hot?
DJ D-Whit: The hottest stuff in the streets is ALMOST ANYTHING OUT THE SOUTH!!! WE KILLING THE WORLD RIGHT NOW. Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and everybody else.
Sammy: 5 artists in your personal playlist this week?
DJ D-Whit: 2 Chainz, Big K.R.I.T, Wayne Greaty, Nipsey Hussle, Kay B Brown
